Magistrate judge orders Anthropic to give music publishers the text and metadata of its LibGen and PiLiMi datasets and the unredacted Bartz briefs
In the music publishers' first suit against Anthropic, the two sides disputed whether Anthropic had to produce documents about its use of BitTorrent to acquire books containing the publishers' lyrics. Magistrate Judge van Keulen ordered Anthropic to produce, by Sept. 11, 2025, the unredacted class certification and summary judgment briefs from Bartz v. Anthropic, and the raw text, extracted text and metadata from the LibGen and PiLiMi datasets. Anthropic also had to serve a verified supplemental answer to one interrogatory. The judge deferred the publishers' broader request for all documents about Anthropic's consideration or use of BitTorrent until the district judge ruled on their pending motion to add torrenting claims to the case.

What the labels mean
Every item says what kind of source it rests on. A court ruling or order is the court's own statement. A company filing is what a defendant says about itself. A government filing is a statement by a government agency that is not a party to the case, such as a statement of interest; it is the government's position, not a ruling. An allegation is what a complaint or motion claims and has not been decided. Reported means press reporting we have not confirmed from the primary document. Summaries are our own; follow the links for the source.
This page is general information, not legal advice. An allegation is not a finding. Whether any of this matters for a particular work or claim is a question for a lawyer.
