Car photography company EVOX alleges Stability AI, Runway, Hugging Face and DeviantArt copied more than 100,000 of its vehicle photographs through the LAION datasets to train Stable Diffusion

EVOX Productions, which licenses studio photographs of automobiles to car makers and dealers, filed a 49-page complaint on July 2, 2026 against three Stability AI entities, Runway AI, Hugging Face and DeviantArt. It alleges that the LAION-2B-en dataset, built from Common Crawl and funded in part by Stability, links to at least 103,957 of EVOX's photographs together with their EVOX file names, that the defendants used those links to download and train Stable Diffusion, that Hugging Face hosts and distributed datasets of car photographs, and that DeviantArt's DreamUp tool runs on Stable Diffusion. The complaint pleads five counts: direct infringement of the reproduction right through training; direct infringement through AI-generated images; direct infringement by distributing the models; contributory infringement; and removal of copyright management information under 17 U.S.C. § 1202. The allegations are untested. According to press reports, EVOX filed a similar suit against Midjourney on July 30, 2026 (No. 2:26-cv-08408); that complaint was not reviewed for this item.
