Court grants final approval of the $1.5 billion Bartz v. Anthropic settlement and enters judgment
Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin approved the non-reversionary $1.5 billion settlement for books on the Works List that Anthropic downloaded from LibGen and the Pirate Library Mirror, and entered judgment. The order notes an estimated payment of about $3,000 per work before fees and costs, and that 440,490 of the 482,460 listed works (91.3 percent) had been claimed as of April 16, 2026. The class covers only books registered with the Copyright Office within five years of publication and either before Anthropic downloaded them or within three months of publication. The court granted class counsel's fee request in part.

What the labels mean
Every item says what kind of source it rests on. A court ruling or order is the court's own statement. A company filing is what a defendant says about itself. A government filing is a statement by a government agency that is not a party to the case, such as a statement of interest; it is the government's position, not a ruling. An allegation is what a complaint or motion claims and has not been decided. Reported means press reporting we have not confirmed from the primary document. Summaries are our own; follow the links for the source.
This page is general information, not legal advice. An allegation is not a finding. Whether any of this matters for a particular work or claim is a question for a lawyer.
