Judge Chhabria rules the publishers' transferred suit against Meta is related to Kadrey, putting Elsevier's class action on track to join the Meta book-piracy cases
On Oct. 22, 2026, Judge Vince Chhabria signed an order relating Kadrey v. Meta (No. 3:23-cv-03417) and Elsevier v. Meta (No. 4:26-cv-11415), the class action by Elsevier, Cengage, Hachette, Macmillan, McGraw Hill, S.C.R.I.B.E. and Scott Turow against Meta and Mark Zuckerberg that was transferred from New York this month (Kadrey Dkt. 876; Elsevier Dkt. 134). The publishers had asked for the relation on Oct. 14 and said Meta agreed. Under the Northern District's related-case rule, a case found related is ordinarily reassigned to the judge handling the earliest-filed case, so the publishers' suit over Meta's downloading and torrenting of pirated books and journal articles to train Llama is expected to proceed before Judge Chhabria, who has set the first Meta trial for May 3, 2027. The Hobbs authors' similar request (Kadrey Dkt. 875, filed Oct. 21) had not been ruled on in the docket record we checked.
Every item says what kind of source it rests on. A court ruling or order is the court's own statement. A company filing is what a defendant says about itself. A government filing is a statement by a government agency that is not a party to the case, such as a statement of interest; it is the government's position, not a ruling. An allegation is what a complaint or motion claims and has not been decided. Reported means press reporting we have not confirmed from the primary document. Summaries are our own; follow the links for the source.
