Judge Chhabria finds the Hobbs, Older and Sheard author suits against Meta related to Kadrey and takes them over
On Oct. 28, 2026, Judge Vince Chhabria signed a related-case order in Kadrey v. Meta (Dkt. 880) finding three later author suits against Meta related to Kadrey and directing that they be reassigned to him: Hobbs v. Meta (No. 3:26-cv-11420, transferred from New York this month), and Older v. Meta (No. 4:26-cv-12115) and Sheard v. Meta (No. 3:26-cv-12126), two of the four parallel individual-author suits filed Oct. 19 that allege Meta torrented books from shadow libraries to train Llama. The order tells the parties that case management conferences in the reassigned cases will be reset, noticed motion hearings are vacated and must be re-noticed before Judge Chhabria, and other case-management deadlines stay in effect. Judge Chhabria related the publishers' Elsevier v. Meta suit to Kadrey on Oct. 22. The order does not mention the Winspear, Reno or Levine suits filed Oct. 19.
Every item says what kind of source it rests on. A court ruling or order is the court's own statement. A company filing is what a defendant says about itself. A government filing is a statement by a government agency that is not a party to the case, such as a statement of interest; it is the government's position, not a ruling. An allegation is what a complaint or motion claims and has not been decided. Reported means press reporting we have not confirmed from the primary document. Summaries are our own; follow the links for the source.
This page is general information, not legal advice. An allegation is not a finding. Whether any of this matters for a particular work or claim is a question for a lawyer.
